There are many advantages in working relationships between foreign parties, however there are several disadvantages as well. Therefore, when Queen Isabella of Spain hired Christopher Columbus, an explorer from another Genoa, Italy, she had a lot to gain for her country from providing means to sponsor his voyage. There are many reasons as to why Queen Isabella would be interested in hiring Columbus to explore new land such as profit to be gained from the exploration like materials and minerals, land, and new knowledge, economic benefits, and religious benefits like the spread of Christianity. Columbus was a very skilled and popular explorer and cartographer, and was one of the few people in his time that believed the world is actually a†¦show more content†¦Religion was also an important factor that helped convince Queen Isabella to employ Columbus. Ferdinand and Isabella were large supporters of the church, a powerful organization at the time. They wanted to spread Catholic ism, which was predominant in Spain. The Franciscans, a group of related mendicant religious orders within the Catholic church, were already somewhat interested in a foreign mission as well. If Spain had more control over Asia through a new trade route and began missions there, they could begin to convert the people living there to Christianity. Furthermore, if more Europeans were Christians, they could be stronger than the Muslims. Columbus was also in support of spreading Christianity, and he wanted to spread the word of Jesus Christ as he believed God had intended him to sail the Atlantic Ocean to do so. There was more profit to come from sponsoring the voyage. There was an agreement between Isabella and Columbus that he would be governor of any lands he discovered and explored, since there was a chance he would discover lands rich in materials. Columbus would be able to keep a tenth of all materials and riches acquired during his exploration. The rest would belong to Spain. Columbus’ rights stated in the agreement would also be hereditary in his family.
